Highway 1 reopens between Boston Bar and Lytton

LYTTON, B.C. — The Trans Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon reopened to the public Tuesday (Aug. 29) morning.
In a news release, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says its contractors removed dangerous trees and loose rocks from the bluffs above the stretch of Highway 1 between Boston Bar and Lytton. The highway initially closed on Aug. 17 when the Kookipi Creek wildfire approached a 10-kilometre stretch of the Trans Canada Highway.
However, drivers are told they will experience significant delays along Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon. The ministry says there is single-lane-alternating traffic through the Falls Creek (Jackass Mountain) highway reconstruction project, and possible lane closures for fire-related repairs and maintenance.
Additionally, the ministry says there is no stopping along the stretch of Highway 1 outside of traffic queues.
The BC Wildfire Service is continuing to battle the Kookipi Creek wildfire, burning northwest of Boston Bar, as it remains active and is nearly 17,000 hectares in size. Drivers are told that Highway 1 between Boston Bar and Lytton could be closed at any time should conditions warrant.
Drivers are also reminded to obey posted speed limits and use caution around roadside workers.
